Vandaag gaf ik een gastcollege aan de TU Delft over bodycams in de collegereeks Responsible Innovation. Ik heb de bodycam gebruikt als voorbeeld van technologische innovatie binnen de politie. Het succes of mislukking van een innovatie hangt niet alleen af van de techniek, maar ook van de mensen die de techniek gebruiken. En zelfs als de technologie perfect is en de gebruikers allemaal precies weten wat ze moeten doen, kan een apparaat als de bodycam nog steeds een totale teleurstelling worden. Dat hangt af van de sociale en juridische context.
Today, I acted as guest lecturer at the Technical University Delft and talked about body cameras as part of the course Responsible Innovation. I use the body camera as an example of technological innovation within police forces. The success or failure of any innovation depends on more than the technology itself; the people using the technology have a major influence. And even with perfectly designed technology, and users who know exactly what to do – any piece of kit like a bodycam can still turn out to be a complete disappointment. This depends on the social and legal context.
